The remote control switches shall be of the single coil, electrically operated, mechanically held type. The main contacts shall be power driven to both the open and closed positions. Operating mechanisms which are affected by gravity, dependent on semi-permanent magnets, or which incorporate dual coil arrangements are not acceptable.
The remote control switch contacts and operator shall be fully enclosed by an insulated removable cover. Provisions shall be incorporated for manual operation during inspection and maintenance.
The remote control switch contacts shall be of silver alloy composition and incorporate wide contact gaps, arc splitting chambers, and arc runners to insure protection against contact deterioration by arc interruption. Material for all current-carrying parts shall be copper or copper alloy.
Control connections shall be clearly marked, clamp type and be suitable for accepting a wire range from No. 14 AWG to No 10 AWG wire.
The remote control switches shall be Underwriters' Laboratories listed under UL 508 for use with, and fully rated for, ballast lighting (electric discharge lamps), tungsten and general use loads. The remote control switches shall have an interrupting capacity of at least 300 of rated current at 0.4 to 0.5 power factor, 480 volts, 60 Hz. Switches requiring derating are unacceptable.
The remote control switches shall be suitable for use in UL 67 listed panelboards and shall have been tested by Underwriters' Laboratories at 480 volts, 60 Hz, 0.2 power factor for short-circuit current ratings of 22,000 amps rms symmetrical when used with molded case circuit breakers and 100,000 amps rms symmetrical when used with current limiting fuses. Switches shall be suitable for use with top or bottom feed panelboards.
Each remote control switch shall be furnished with an Owners Manual providing installation and operating instructions.
