General Description of the Program
GOAL first started working in South Sudan in the mid1980, originally through short term emergency intervention. GOAL South Sudan is currently in 5 programme sites Twic County, and Abyei AAA (Warrap State) and in the Melut, Maiwut and Ulang Counties of Upper Nile State. In Twic, GOAL South Sudan operates public health and nutrition programs activities including curative and preventive primary health care.
General Description of the Role

The current objective of GOAL programming in Twic is to improve health and nutritional status of vulnerable populations. GOAL’s current focus is on coordinating all aspects of programming to provide a holistic and integrated service in our areas of operation. The Stabilization Centre Nurse will play an active role in assessment, set-up, carrying out activities, reporting, monitoring and evaluating the quality of the nutrition programme in Akak Nutrition Stabilization Centre. The nutrition programme has also scaled up its strategy focusing on managing acute malnutrition as part of the basic health services in Twic and Stabilization Centre Nurse will play a key role in the implementation of this.

Specific areas of programme activity include:


  • Implement SC {Stabilization Centre} activities within Akak PHCC and ensure the management of the commodities {food, drugs, and equipment}

  • Systematic nutrition screening of the children under 5 years admitted in the stabilization Centre, in Akak PHCC.

  • Carry out daily nutritional status monitoring of severely malnourished children as prescribed in the protocol.

  • Prepare and administer the appropriate formulas/feeds for the malnourished children in the SC

  • Record beneficiaries attendance, new admission and discharges

  • Provide appropriate nutrition counseling and health education for the mothers and caretakers.

  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports for the MOH and GOAL.

  • Ensure continuous availability of drugs and nutrition supplies for the mothers/caretakers.

  • Ensure proper handing over of duties within the SC.

  • Consult and inform nutrition officer and/or Clinical officer on issues that may affect the smooth operations of the stabilization Centre.

  • Perform other duties limited to the Health and nutrition programme as assigned by the line manager.

The Stabilization Centre Nurse is under the technical direct supervision of the Nutrition officer. S/he will work closely with the nutrition team, livelihoods team, community health team, clinical officers, head of clinics, diagnosticians, reproductive health team and the rest of the health management and WASH team in the implementation of nutrition activities. S/he will thus ensure close collaboration with all other health and non-health staff in the area of operation as well partner agencies. GOAL field security procedures and standards of integrity should be adhered to at all times.


Key Duties

  • Effectively following the OTP and SC protocols for the medical care of the SAM cases with complications.

  • Work closely with Stabilization centre staff to ensure all SC protocols are understood and agree and appropriate referrals take place to and from the OTP.

  • Prepare plan of action for effective OTP and SC implementation in consultation with the nutrition officer

  • Ensure all criteria are respected and documented, including admission, discharge and transfer to and from the OTP

  • Ensure comprehensive health checks, checking Vitals, frequent medicines and feed administration and treatment according to the protocols.

  • Ensure timely therapeutic preparation, provision and monitoring.

  • Completing and updating the patient file to ensure a track of patient progress

  • Ensure adequate availability of all medical and therapeutic feed supply and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned by discussing with logistics

  • Follow-up and provide feedback to the nutrition officer on the amount and quality of the treatment supplies if it does not comply with specified quality standards.

  • Report on progress and any problems in a timely manner

  • Ensure cases not meeting admission criteria return home or referred to the appropriate programme as early as possible and counsel the family why their child is not admitted

  • Through liaison with the community mobilizers and nutrition volunteers, provide effective follow up of default cases

  • Development of fact sheets and other training materials as required for the MOH health staffs under the guidance of nutrition officer.

  • Provide key health and education messages to beneficiaries based on the protocol and guidelines

  • Respond to inquiries regarding the technical aspects of the program admission and discharge whenever necessary

  • Follow-up and ensure good interaction with the beneficiaries

  • Perform any other duties requested by the immediate supervisor

  • Follow and respect the current protocols specially drug administration i.e. for de-worming, malaria, polio and measles, and micronutrient mineral/ Vitamin A supplements targeting children and PLW

  • Liaison with the pharmacy, store, EPI and MNCH as and when required

  • Add the activities linked to health and nutrition education in the protocol

  • Participate in the follow-up of orders and consumption

  • Compile the statistical data (admission, default, cured, absent, death) and draft a report on activities

  • To convene the ward rounds with clinical officer and update on patient progress.

  • Should work well integrate with other departments of the Hospital and the Paediatric unit specifically as an integral component of the health services

  • Maintained SC patient record file

  • Submission of SC reports to Data analyst

  • Maintained supply consumption reports.

Required experience /qualifications:



  • Diploma holder nurse, with at least one year field experience in managing malnutrition activities in emergency, malnutrition case detection and treatment and EPI/ PHC.

  • Experience in data collection and basic data analysis.

  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.

  • Able to work under minimal supervision.

  • Basic computer skills will also be an added advantage.

  • Experience in training, managing and motivating staff/volunteers;

  • Fluent in spoken and written English;

  • Staff management experience and good inter-personnel skills;

  • Respect of the local culture and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment;

  • Flexible and highly motivated team player;

  • Ability to work effectively in basic and difficult field environments for long periods

  • Previous work experience in the MoH structures Will be an added advantage.
