A RESOLUTION encouraging awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

WHEREAS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is better known in the United States as Lou Gehrig's Disease; and

WHEREAS, Lou Gehrig was a Major League Baseball player who set many records and was twice named the American League's Most Valuable Player before being stricken by ALS; and

WHEREAS, ALS is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by degeneration of cell bodies of the upper and lower motor neurons in the gray matter of the anterior horn of the spinal cord; and

WHEREAS, ALS affects military veterans at twice the rate of the general population; and

WHEREAS, ALS occurs in adulthood, most commonly between the ages of 40 and 70 years of age, with the most common age of onset being in the fifties; and

WHEREAS, ALS affects both men and women without bias and throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries; and

WHEREAS, annually, more that 5,000 new ALS patients are diagnosed throughout the nation; and

WHEREAS, ALS has no known cause, prevention, treatment, or cure; and

WHEREAS, many other well-known people have been known to have ALS, including former Vice President Henry Wallace, Senator Jacob Javits, Hall of Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter, and the creator of Sesame Street, Jon Stone; and

WHEREAS, ALS Awareness Month is observed in May in the United States; and

WHEREAS, ALS Awareness Month is a campaign launched to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for ALS; and

WHEREAS, during ALS Awareness Month, a National ALS Advocacy Day is held when advocates go to Washington, D.C., to urge congress to support measures to find treatments and a cure for ALS;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The members of the House of Representatives, both individually and collectively, encourage awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives shall transmit a copy of this Resolution to Representative Tanya Pullin for delivery.
