Three Label choices in Pharmacy 7

  1. Standard label stock on rolls via a dot matrix printer

  2. Laser labels formatted to work with RPMS Pharmacy 7 (VA laser labels –ask for IHS format) You can obtain these labels from one of the sources on the attachment. Most sites are using HP4200 series Laser Printers

  3. Zebra printers

NBSignature labels can't be printed on a slave device b/c they are auto-tasked

Printer formatting is controlled at several levels

I. The operating system (O/S ) either AIX or WINDOWs

II. The RPMS Device and Terminal Type Files

III. In the IHS and VA Pharmacy Site Parameters
I. To Set up the VA Laser Label Printer in AIX

Four Steps

  1. Unpack, connect, and configure the printer assigning an IP address for your network i.e. 161.223.xxx.yyy

  2. Define IP to /etc/hosts

    1. Use the unix editor (vi) to name the new printer and associate it with the new IP address.

  3. Set up a print Queue

    1. Normally hpJetDirect is the type of queue selected since most printers are compatible with the PCL drivers used by HP.

    2. Select the appropriate manufacturer and model of the printer that you’re installing and then name it using a convention established by your facility/Area Office.

    3. Under the printer connection characteristics make sure that the HOSTNAME of the JetDirect Card matches the name you entered in the /etc/hosts file.

  4. Program Print Spooler

1) $vi /etc/hosts

"/etc/hosts" 181 lines, 8317 characters # @(#)47

# Internet Address Hostname # Comments

#

161.223.78.216 scip216 SCIP216 #XXX DPS IP PRINTER

161.223.78.12 scip12 SCIP12 #XXX Pharm HP Label Printer

161.223.78.30 scip30 SCIP30 #XXX DPS Printer

2) SMIT to create an AIX print queue

Log in as root and at the AIX prompt type SMIT

Select Print Spooling

Select AIX Print Spooling

Select Add a Print Queue

Select hpJetDirect

Most printers are compatible with the PCL drivers used by HP

Select the manufacturer of your printer

Select your printer’s model

If your printer’s model is not on the list, select the model most similar to it.

Always select this (NEVER #1)

The setting is always the same, Do NOT make this system a BOOTP/TFTP server.

Select PCL print queue*

Create a queue name using a local convention **

*Most printers are compatible with HP PCL.

**It’s easiest to make the queue name and the hostname which was created in the /etc/hosts file the same. (K.I.S.S.)

HOSTNAME must match the name that was entered in the /etc/hosts file

Do not have to change this #

Once the PCL and the HOSTNAME fields are completed, press enter to complete the setup.

The print queue is now set up. Exit this menu (F10) and take a look at the print queue by using the lpstat command.

$ lpstat -pbaip30

Queue Dev Status Job Files User PP % Blks Cp Rnk

------- ----- --------- --- ------------------ ---------- ---- -- ----- --- ---

scip30 hp@ba READY

3) To Program Print Spooler in AIX

    1. Unix margin width is 180, characters

    2. Length is 84 lines

    3. Pitch is 16

    4. Type style = courier and 600dpi.

You need to use SMIT to increase the lines per page from 66 to 84 and the columns per page from 80 to 184. You will need Systems Administrator Authority (root) to do so. Follow the path below.

II. Set up the printer in RPMS through the VA Kernel.

The Device and Terminal type definitions need to be correct.  The terminal type associated with the Laser Label device must be a laser label type (not P-OTHER).

1. In Fileman use Transfer Entries to create a new terminal type for use by pharmacy. (i.e. P-HPLASER-P12-PHARM) if others at the facility are using the P-HPLASER-P12 for non Rx printing.

II-B Run PSOLLU2

The laser label configuration routine (PSOLLU2) must be run for each laser printer/terminal type combination. If you have several laser printers defined in the Device File all of which use the same terminal type, then you only need to run the utility once. Using the P-OTHER terminal type is not recommended.  Try one of the HP terminal types i.e. P-HPLASER-P12. The device prompt should be answered with the name of the laser printer device.  The routine will then determine the associated terminal type and add the control codes to that terminal type.  This is why it is important to have the Device and Terminal Type entries correct at the outset.

For printing labels in the IV program, once 7.0/5.0 is loaded you will have to delete one line in the site parameter so it will still print multiple labels correctly.

Separate Devices for multiple drawers on a Lexmark Optra S Laser Printer

  1. Create a new Print Queue for the Lower Drawer.

See Pages 2-9 above. Name the new print queue something that indicates the same printer but using drawer or tray 2 I.E. pkyleD2018. The HOSTNAME will be the same as for the other print queue created for drawer 1 (in this case pky018) so the print device will be hp@pky018

Set the _u variable to 2 using the Programming options (page 8-9 above)

  1. Create a new entry in the Device File for the Lower Drawer using the New Print Queue that you just created

RPMS will send the PMI to the plain paper drawer only if a PMI is requested separately

Both drawers will work but drawer 2 has plain paper but the Label print routines are not programmed to look at the second device in the event of overflow  The optimal situation (and most cost effective) would be for the first page of the label to print on label stock and any subsequent pages of patient information print on plain paper from drawer 2. If you print a PMI from that option it will print from drawer 2 but during Rx entry all pages print on label stock from drawer 1.

For two sided printing

    1. If the Sig is too long it will print out on the back of the label

    2. An extra sheet feeds between each patient
