Scottish Politicians




Related section of pack: Parliament and the electoral system
Aim: To raise student awareness of Scottish politicians and their roles.
Materials: 2-page task sheet for each student.
ESOL level: Intermediate 1 - 2
SCQF level: 4 - 5
Time: 30 minutes for the task, 1 hour for the research activity.
Preparation: Photocopies of the task sheet.
In class:

  1. Explain to the group that they are going to find out about Scottish politicians. Preface this with reference to the role of the two parliaments. Indicate that due to their traditionally strong position in the Labour Party, Scottish politicians are prominent at Westminster at the moment.




  1. Divide into pairs and give out the task sheet. Stress that students should work together. Read through with the group and check that the vocabulary is clear.




  1. Learners then complete the activity, either using the Internet or in the library.




  1. Compile and discuss results with the whole class and answer any questions raised.

  2. Discuss the research topics with the students and help each to choose a topic. Allow a further hour for research.




  1. Discuss results on a class basis.


Variation: Students can be asked to produce a short piece of writing based on their research.

Suggested follow-up: play the Robert Burns song, ‘Parcel o’ Rogues’.
