Performance Technology, Inc. presents P T T O O L S MESSAGES.EXE - (C)Copyright 1987 Performance Technology, Inc. Description : ARCNET traffic monitor This utility counts and displays the number of messages (actually the number of individual packets) transmitted by each node on the network. Upon exit, this information is written to the standard output, which may, of course, be redirected to a file. MESSAGES uses 9 digit counters. The counts shown on the screen are truncated to 4 digits (and intensified if the actual count is larger), but the actual count is written to the standard output when the programs exits. All NETBIOS connections are broken while MESSAGES is running, but POWERLan will re-establish them. MESSAGES can be forced to use the second, (or nth) RIM on a machine by simply mentioning the RIM number on the command line; "MESSAGES 2", for instance, will force MESSAGES to use the second RIM. This program is designed to measure real-time activity and is optimized for maximum performance with a standard monochrome video adaptor; it does not try to account for the hardware bugs in various color adaptors, and may produce "snow" on some color systems. MESSAGES, is compatible with Performance Technology, Inc.'s RIMDRVR.EXE, an ARCNET card driver. Since MESSAGES takes complete control of the network card, it is incompatible with POWERvol for RMS. MESSAGES will refuse to run if the RMSVOL driver is installed. TOKNTIME.EXE - (C)Copyright 1987 Performance Technology, Inc. Description : ARCNET token-trip timing utility TOKNTIME displays a graph of percentage of token trips versus time (in milliseconds). An idle network will result in a single vertical line (100% of the token trips take the same amount of time) whose horizontal position is a function of the number of nodes on the network. Traffic on the network will cause the left-most line to shrink and one or more other lines to appear. TOKNTIME indicates the (short term) average token trip time, in addition to functioning as a monitor for network reconfigurations which flashes the message 'RECON' in the lower right-hand corner of the screen when reconfiguration is detected. All NETBIOS connections are broken while TOKNTIME is running, but POWERLan will re-establish them. TOKNTIME, is compatible with Performance Technology, Inc.'s RIMDRVR.EXE, an ARCNET card driver. RIMTEST displays the local node ID when performing the echo server function. RIMTEST now sends an 'all ones' packet once every sixteen echo messages. This helps detect marginal power supplies in hubs and workstations. RPS.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1986 Description : Program to display 'Reads Per Second' being supplied by each Datapoint DOS File Processor. RPS monitors all Datapoint DOS File Processors on a network and displays the number of Reads Per Second (averaged over the last second) that they are supplying. This program is designed to measure real-time activity and is optimized for maximum performance with a standard monochrome video adaptor; it does not try to account for the hardware bugs in various color adaptors, and may produce "snow" on some color systems. RPS is compatible with Performance Technology, Inc.'s RIMDRVR.EXE, an ARCNET card driver. This utility is only useful to users of Performance Technology, Inc.'s "Datapoint DOS Enhancement Products". RIMS.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1986 Description : Finds and displays the ARCNET node address, of every node on the network. If the output of RIMS is redirected to a file, the usual screen map is produced AND a list of the nodes is left in the file. RIMS is compatible with Performance Technology, Inc.'s RIMDRVR.EXE, an ARCNET card driver. RIMS can run in a machine using NETBIOS. All NETBIOS connections are broken while the diagnostics are running, but POWERLan will re-establish them. RIMS can be forced to use the second, (or nth) RIM on a machine by simply mentioning the RIM number on the command line; "RIMS 2", for instance, will force RIMS to use the second RIM. This program is designed to measure real-time activity and is optimized for maximum performance with a standard monochrome video adaptor; it does not try to account for the hardware bugs in various color adaptors, and may produce "snow" on some color systems. Since RIMS takes complete control of the network card, it is incompatible with POWERvol for RMS. RIMS refuses to run if the RMSVOL driver is installed. RENDIR.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1987 Description : Rename directory utility. Usage: rendir Can be used to rename directories or to rename a file from one directory to another. FFIND.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1987 Description: File name finder Usage: ffind [-s] [-d] [-a] [path][file] path defaults to \, file to *.* -s sort as directed by sort order -t sort by date and time, newest file first -T sort by date and time, oldest file first -s sort by size, largest file first -S sort by size, smallest file first -n sort by name, ascending -N sort by name, descending -p sort by path, ascending -P sort by path, descending -d include directory files -a finds the file only if the file has the archive bit set If the utility is executed with no parameters, the help screen will be displayed. This utility is particularly useful to locate a file whose directory is unknown, or to detect multiple copies of what should be a unique file name. Other uses include looking for obsolete .BAK files which are many times an unwanted side effect of some editors. FFIND is capable of locating files which have "HIDDEN" and "SYSTEM" attribute bits set, as long as the file name fufills the filename search specification. TREECOPY.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1987 Description : Copies entire tree matching generic file spec from path1 to path2. Usage: treecopy

[-a] [-o] [-e] [-d] [-c] -a ignores Age; default is to copy only if newer. -o only Overwrites existing files; no new files are created. -e only copies into Existing directories; no new ones are created. -d only searches single Directory. -c ONLY Checks for existence and age; NO CHANGES ARE MADE TO DISK. Useful for doing directory structure maintenance, updating software making new disks, etc. If there is insufficient memory to execute, TREECOPY will display an error message. Execution may also be stopped by pressing CTRL-C. If the target disk has insufficient available space to hold the output, TREECOPY will delete any PARTIAL file that may be created on the output disk. TREECOPY copies all files irrespective of HIDDEN or SYSTEM attributes. DIRCMP.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1987 Description : Directory comparsion utility. Usage: dircmp directory1 directory2 SCROLL.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1987 Description : Text file examination utility. usage: scroll Displays the file on the screen in READ ONLY mode. Use the #, #, PgUp, and PgDn to scroll through the file. Pressing ESC exits the program. STRINGS.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1988 Description: Display ASCII printable strings in files. Usage: strings [-] ... - display strings at least characters long (default=4) This utility is useful to find copyright messages, exact wording of error messages, etc. WEEKDAY.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1988 Description : Program to indicate the day of the week. Usage: weekday Returns an DOS ERRORLEVEL exit code from 1 to 7 indicating the day of the week. An errorlevel of 1 is returned for Sunday, and Saturday returns an errorlevel of 7. This utility can be used in batch files to control a daily startup routine or anywhere control based on the day of the week or knowledge of such is required. SHOWSER.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1988 Description : Show all Performance Technology, Inc. ROM serial numbers ROM Type Version Serial # n - serial numbers found. The various ROM types are as follows: RIMROM - Datapoint DOS/RMS enhancement products NETROM - Performance Technology ROM for POWERLan diskless boot. AUTHROM - Miscellaneos Performance Technology Authorizations DSKROM - POWERdisk ROM - Used as Datapoint 9391 disk controller In the early days of networking, the most expedient and efficient way to allow a program to communicate with a network adapter was to place the necessary code on an ROM. This practice required an intimate knowledge of the engineering specifications associated with a particular network adapter. With the rapid proliferation of ARCNET card manufacturers, it became unfeasable to research, evaluate and to produce ROMS for each and every different ARCNET board. Today, the most expedient way to communicate with the widest variety of network cards is via a driver loaded at configuration time. Currently ROMS must be used for booting diskless workstations from a bootserver on Performance Technology, Inc.'s POWERLan, as is the case for Novell, 3COM and others. ROMS can utilized as a security measure against software theft, and as an assurance to the customer that they are in compliance with all licensing agreements. If it was absolutely mandatory to reduce the size of MS-DOS by approximately 500 bytes, and no other options were available, the usage of a ROM would accomplish this goal. SHOWSER is compatible with Performance Technology, Inc.'s RIMDRVR.EXE, an ARCNET card driver. TREEDEL - (C)Copyright Performance Technology, Inc. 1989 Description : Delete files and directories usage: treedel
[-] : -f delete files only (no directories) -r include files with read-only attribute set -i include files with hidden attribute set -a include all files regardless of attributes -d include path directory specified. TREEDEL will delete files which have "HIDDEN" and "SYSTEM" attribute bits set. If you specify a generic file spec other than the default, which is *.*, then only files are deleted (no directories). You cannot delete your current directory. FREE.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1988 Description : Display amount and percentage of free disk space. Usage: free [] Shows the capacity, free space, cluster and sector size of the specified drive. If no drive letter is specified, all available hard drives are shown. The output is presented in table format as follows: Label Free bytes %free Capacity Cluster size Sector size C: LOCALC 9895936 29.6 33400832 2048 512 D: UTILITY 19308544 57.8 33400832 2048 512 E: APPS 4210688 99.9 4214784 4096 512 to obtain diskette information, the drive letter must be specified on the command line. FREE is used to quickly check on the amount of disk space currently available and helps you make decisions on where to load new software packages, or determine the output drive for prorams which deal with large amounts of data such as sorts, and database reorganizations. INTTEST.EXE - (C)Copyright Performance Technology 1990 Description : This program tests the timer interrupt to see if under heavy loading the timer can recurse more than once causing a stack overflow and subsequent program crash. This bug is in all IBM PC's, PC XT's, and PC AT's with BIOS's dated earlier than June 1985. Unfortunately it was also duplicated by many of the clone makers (not COMPAQ or MICRO-FIVE). This symptom can also be caused by drivers or TSR's hooking the timer interrupt with code that functions improperly. To verify that the BIOS is the problem test the machine in a bare bones configuration without any drivers or TSR's loaded. Usage: inttest The program will then display the message: Testing the timer interrupt. If the BIOS passes the test, the message: Functions properly. No recursion occurs. or Functions properly. One level of recursion only. If the BIOS fails the test, the message: Does not function properly. Recursion occuring 1st stack difference = 2nd stack difference = If insufficient memory exists to run the program, a message indicating such, will be displayed. PTTOOLS are distributed in their individual program format as well as in this menu. This allows for utilization of these programs as a freestanding utility, invoked from the DOS command line, and for programs which direct their output to STDOUT, these utilities can be linked together for other powerful uses. For example, a friend of mine has created a batch file called MSEEK.BAT to find the occurrence of a word in a number of files. There were many times when it has played a big role in trying to figure out which module a particular message came from.
