National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Nautical Skills)

Level

Credits

Purpose

This certificate recognises the nautical and maritime safety skills and knowledge required for award of the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Advanced Deckhand – Fishing Endorsement qualification. These are the skills and knowledge required to work safely on the deck of a seafood vessel, and provide the foundation for further MNZ qualifications such as the New Zealand Offshore Watchkeeper (NZOW), New Zealand Offshore Master (NZOM), Mate of a Deep Sea Fishing Vessel (1MDSV), and Master of a Deep Sea Fishing Vessel (MDSV).

This qualification consists of a compulsory section because this covers the requirements of the MNZ qualification. This section covers seafood vessel operations skills and knowledge such as working with wire ropes, chains, and related fittings; safe deck practices; working on a commercial fishing vessel; protection of the marine environment; and the duties of a watchkeeper. It also covers navigation and seamanship skills and knowledge such as berthing and letting go; anchoring a vessel; use of knots, lashings, and navigation aids; and stowage and handling of ropes. In addition, it covers sea survival and sea safety skills and knowledge such as awareness of vessel parts, fittings, and equipment; abandon ship procedures and sea survival techniques; and fire prevention.

Replacement Information

This qualification and the National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Fishing Technology) replaced the National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Deck Hand) [Ref: 0645].

Special Notes

Achievement of this qualification meets the approved training programme requirements for the MNZ Advanced Deckhand – Fishing Endorsement. The Advanced Deckhand – Fishing Endorsement qualification may be issued following candidate fulfilment of all the MNZ requirements specified in Maritime Rules Part 32, which include:

  • attending and completing an approved training programme (fulfilled by holding this qualification)

Requirements for Award of Qualification

Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusion-list/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
