Purpose

People credited with this unit standard are able to plan and implement turf pest control programmes, and evaluate pest control procedures for effectiveness of control.

2 Definition

Enterprise standards – the standards and procedures set by the client or employing organisation for evaluating the effectiveness of the pest control programme.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Plan and implement turf pest control programmes.
Range at least three pests from – New Zealand grass grub, porina, black beetle, sod webworm, Tasmanian grass grub, Argentine stem weevil, black field cricket, nematodes, ants, earthworms, cotula weevil, mealy bug, greasy cutworm.
Evidence requirements
1.1 Turf pests are identified and selected for control, based on an assessment of the pest population.
1.2 Control options are evaluated in terms of an integrated pest management approach.
Range at least one of – regulatory, biological, genetic, cultural, physical, chemical.
1.3 Methods for controlling the pest are selected and implemented taking into account their effect on the environment, turf use, and budget constraints.
1.4 Agrichemicals are applied, if required, in accordance with NZS 8409:2004 Management of agrichemicals.
Outcome 2
Evaluate pest control procedures for effectiveness of control.
Evidence requirements
2.1 Methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of control programme comply with standard population analysis methodology and enterprise standards.
Range methods – extent of turf damage; presence of pest – adults, larvae.
2.2 Results of evaluation are used to confirm control programme or to identify necessary changes to programme to achieve effectiveness required.
