Purpose

This national certificate recognises the skills of an experienced diving instructor in speciality areas. Holders of this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:

  • planning diving activities

  • providing the overall instruction required during a diving activity

  • instructing clients on specialist dive courses, in rescue diving, night diving underwater navigation, diving off boats, and search and recovery diving

  • maintaining client safety.

This qualification has been structured to recognise the diversity in diving workplaces and the nature of work that they undertake. To reflect this, the qualification includes an elective section where candidates are able to choose unit standards relevant to their workplace or career aspirations, eg aquaculture, underwater photography, film and television, recreation, adult education and training, engineering, emergency management, construction, boat building, marine science, maritime, retail, and tourism.

This qualification focuses on the technical and general skills required by diving instructors and builds on the skills and knowledge recognised by the National Certificate in Diving (Foundation Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 1321] and the National Certificate in Diving (Leadership) (Level 4) [Ref: 1322]. The compulsory unit standards will allow entry to further training in the Underwater Construction such as the National Diploma in Diving (Occupational) (Level 5) [Ref: 1008], Scientific, Recreational Instruction, and Dive Tourism sectors of the industry.
The National Certificate in Diving (Instruction) (Level 6) [Ref: 1323] can enable people to gain employment within the dive tourism sector as a dive instructor.

Special Notes

This medical statement must remain valid for the duration of the course of study.
