National Certificate in Parks and Recreation (Level 3) with strands in Local Authority Park Ranger, and Parks Contractor

Level

Credits

103-106

This qualification is expiring. The last date to meet the requirements is 31 December 2010.

Purpose

The National Certificate in Parks and Recreation recognises the essential skills required to work as a local authority park ranger or parks contractor. The qualification comprises a core compulsory section, and strand requirements to provide for the development of specialisation.

The core compulsory section has been designed with an emphasis on practical field skills including safe use of basic equipment, knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in te ao tūroa, outdoor navigation, and a basic ecological understanding of plants and animals.
The Local Authority Parks Ranger strand has been designed for people working as park ranger in recreation or natural park area. The focus is on a broad practical skill base and the competencies needed to provide safe parks services and includes dealing with compliance issues, basic construction skills, maintenance of tracks, communication skills, park history and legislation, and customer service.
The Parks Contractor strand has been designed for people working primarily as contractors in New Zealand park areas. The emphasis is on sound health and safety practices and practical field skills.
Both strands contain a very wide choice of electives reflecting the multi-skilled nature of this industry. It is intentional that this qualification shares many unit standards with the National Certificate in Conservation (Trainee Ranger) [Ref: 0642] as it is designed to recognise broad transferable and generic skills as well as specialised industry skills.
While not a direct replacement, this qualification was developed following a review of the National Certificate in Community Recreation (Level 4) with strands in Community Arts, Countryside Parks, and Urban Parks [Ref: 0451].

Replacement Information

This qualification has been replaced by the National Certificate in Parks and Recreation (Park Ranger) (Level 3) [Ref: 1475].

Requirements for Award of Qualification

Award of NQF Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided in section 7 of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Rules and Procedures publications available at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/acrp/index.html.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID).
