Professional Experience

1998 to present: Assistant Researcher, Harold L. Lyon Arboretum, University of Hawaii

Manager of the micropropagation laboratory focusing primarily on the tissue culture of native

Hawaiian plants and tropicals. Curator of Native Hawaiian Plants.

1988 to 1998: Research Associate III, University of Hawaii, Dept. of Horticulture

Conducted Dendrobium orchid and Anthurium research for crop improvement utilizing classical

breeding techniques as well as genetic engineering. Main duties included: tissue culture (initiation,

regeneration and maintenance of in vitro plant cultures), plant transformation, and molecular analysis.

General lab management included ordering of chemicals and supplies, supervision of students and

student help.

1985-1988: Sales/Research Manager, Hawaiian Floral Nursery, Waimanalo, Hawaii

Responsible for plant sales to local, mainland and foreign clientele. Supervision of workers, planting

and shipping schedules, and obtained in vitro plant material for propagation from local and out of state

suppliers. General nursery duties included setting pesticide and fertilizer spray and watering

schedules, inventory and book keeping. Initiated their orchid breeding program.

1982 to 1985: Laboratory Technician, H&R Nurseries, Waimanalo, Hawaii

Clonal and seed in vito propagation of orchid plants. Helped to initiate their R&D program for

improvement in orchid breeding.

1981-1982: Graduate Assistant, University of Hawaii, Dept. of Horticulture

Nursery propagation, data recording and analysis of orchid and anthurium plants grown for selection.

Lab duties included in vitro plant propagation through seed germination and/or cloning, culture media

preparation, maintenance of cultures. Supervised student help.
