Malaysia, Singapore och Bintan Island 2009.06.08-2009.07.03.
Primary a family trip but with concern of spots to see some good birds.
Day 1-2: Arrive to KualaLumpur and stay at very nice hotel at the outskirts of town. See some starlings and swifts. Later night train to Singapore. Dag 3-7: Transport to Bintan Island and Nirwana resort where we spent 3nights. Biggest surprise was the Great-billed Heron which was seen on very small iskand just outside the beach. I could approch it by a rented canoe. Here I also saw a flock of Rufous-fronted Babblers. Dag 7-10: Singapore and day train back to K.L. Dag 11: Transport to Taman Negara and lodging at Mutiara Lodge. At dusk a lonesome Helmeted Hornbill came in and perched in a tree. Dag 12-14: Some family activities mixed with some birding. It hadn´t been rain for the last two week and bird activity was lower than expected. The Pittas, which were my target species ended up with only one Blue-winged heard. Also the Broadbills were much more difficult to find than expected. I heard several Green och Banded but never managed to come up close enough. The National park is a very nice place though so a visit in the future is a promise. The trip back with the long boats is a very nice experince and a saw totaly 7 Red-wattled Lapwing. Dag 14-18: Visit to central K.L och Petronas Tower. Taxi to Firefly resort, Kuala Selangor. Dag 18-19: Evening excursion to see thousands of fire flies wich was a great experience. At the lodge I also saw Mangrove Flycatcher and Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker. Early morning at Kuala Selangor were we surprisingly saw a juvenile Barred Eagle-owl. Dag 19-27: Family and beach vacation at Pangkor Island resort. Not that many birds but we were lucky to meet a snake resercher who was written a work about reptiles at Pangkor Island. We took part of a release of a python snake which had been captured in the hotel´s kitchen. A nice place just to relax and enjoy the malaysian atmosphere. Dag 28: Travel back to Sweden.
