IST Internships at Penn State Harrisburg
The IST Internship Program is required for all baccalaureate degree students. The Internship enables each student to gain valuable work experience in the Information Technology field. The Internship must be at least 400 hours in length to apply towards the degree requirement.

  1. When to do an IST Internship

    An internship may be completed at any time during your Penn State career using the following guidelines:



    Freshman Year: Full-time or part-time internship, summer semester only

    Sophomore Year: Full-time or part-time internship, summer semester only

    Junior Year: Full-time or part-time internship during any semester (*fall, spring or summer)

    Senior Year: Full-time or part-time internship during any semester *(fall, spring or summer)

    Fifth Year: Full-time or part-time internship during any semester (*fall, spring or summer)

    *An internship during a spring or fall semester may delay your graduation date by one additional semester.





  2. Create a Resume

    The resume is a summary of your skills and experiences which employers use to identify potential candidates. It is your first contact with a prospective employer. You may receive help with your resume from Career Services, from the IST Internship Program Student Handbook, and from your IST Internship Coordinator.

    Upload your resume to the Career Management Web System at www.collegecentral.com/psu-harrisburg. Directions for using this web site are included as the end of this document.

    Please submit a copy of your resume to the IST Internship Coordinator to indicate your interest in finding an internship.



    III. Release Forms

    Read and sign the “IST Internship Agreement” form and the “Consent to Release Records” form. To facilitate the release of information to a prospective employer, these forms must be turned into Ms. Becky Dolan, Staff Assistant in the School of Business Administration.





  1. Find an Internship

    1. You will need to find an internship. You must conduct a job search using any or all of the following resources. Before accepting an internship, check with the IST Internship Coordinator to make sure the internship experience is valid and conforms to the guidelines set forth by the School of IST.



    1. At Penn State Harrisburg, IST Internships will be posted at the following locations:

    1. On the Career Management System known as College Central. You may search through these internships at www.collegecentral.com/psu-harrisburg.

    2. On the Internship bulletin board outside of the School of Business Administration Office Suite.





    1. You may register with the University Park database at http://www.ist.psu.edu/internship



    1. You may conduct a search on the Internet by contacting companies, tech councils, or internship search engines. Some useful sites are:

    1. You may contact companies through relatives, friends, and other associates who might be aware of internship opportunities.



  1. Accept the Job

    Did you check with the IST Internship Coordinator to make sure the internship experience is valid and conforms to the guidelines set forth by the School of IST? Then, accept the Internship experience with the employer.





  2. Register for IST 495

    Complete the “Career Related Work Experience Form” at www.ist.psu.edu/internship for University Park and please print a copy of this form for the School of Business Administration. The form should be given to Ms. Dolan, Staff Assistant.

    You must register as an intern each semester you are at your work experience, including summer. There is no class to attend. Enjoy your internship!



  3. Evaluation Forms and IST 495 Report

    Complete and return all evaluation forms to Ms. Dolan, Staff Assistant in the School of Business Administration, by 5:00 p.m. on the Monday of the last week of classes each semester you are completing an Internship.



    Also due will be the Internship Report describing the company where you worked, the actual work you did as an intern, and your overall impressions about your experience as an intern. This report must be given to the IST Internship Coordinator by Monday of the last week of classes.





  4. Grading Your Internship

    The Internship Coordinator will review your evaluations and report, and will submit a letter grade for completion of IST 495.





  5. International Student Participation

    International students are required to meet with Ms. Donna Howard, Coordinator of Nontraditional Student Affairs and International Student Adviser. Ms. Howard will advise students on the requirements established for international students.





  6. Financial Aid

    Students participating in the IST Internship Program are NOT eligible for financial aid assistance for the semesters they are on full-time internship assignment and registered for less than six(6) credits. This includes state and federal financial aid, as well as grants and scholarships. Because all financial aid packages are tailored to the student, you are strongly encourages to contact the Financial Aid Office to understand your package.
