251/252 – Great Lakes

v3.6 – WEB - 06 May 10

Staging track 2 – Fairport Yard
Train 251 is a unit iron ore train originating from the Missabi Range on the Great Northern with run-through power. At Klamath Falls, the GN 6-axle power is replaced with 4-axle power due to the sharp curvature of the Coos Bay Branch. At Coos Bay, the loaded ore cars are setout for unloading and empties are returned to Fairport Yard as train 252. In Klamath Falls, the 4-axle power is swapped for the GN run-through 6-axle power before departing for Fairport.

251 Depart Fairport Switch Upon signal
West Sprague

Departing Sprague, the dispatcher will advise whether the power change will occur on the west end of the Klamath Falls siding, or in the Klamath Falls Yard, depending on traffic in the Klamath Falls Yard. Either way, 251 must enter the siding at Klamath East Switch #29 in order to be properly lined to enter the line to Coos Bay.
Klamath Falls Siding - Power Swap - change 6-axle for 4-axle power - Preferred
If the power swap is planned for the siding, request unlock for Engine Facility,

Switch #9, as your train enters the siding at East Klamath Falls.

  • Stop train east of Switch #9. After lining both sides of Switch #9 for the Engine Facility, cut off 6-axle GN power and take to Klamath Falls Shops for servicing.

  • 4-Axle power for 251 from the Klamath Falls Shops is coupled to 251’s train using Switch #9.

  • Before departing from Klamath, 251’s crew must obtain authority from the Dispatcher to occupy the Coos Bay Branch.

  • After an air test, 251 proceeds west to Coos Bay.

  • Contact the Coos Bay Yardmaster when departing K Falls.

K Falls Yard - Power Swap - change 6-axle for 4-axle power – Alternate option
If the power swap is planned for the Yard, 251 will be lined into the siding and the Arrivals/Departure Track through Switch #23. Manually line your train into track 1 if clear. If track 1 is not clear, use the A/D track in the Yard.

  • Train 251 stops east of Klamath Falls West Yard Throat Switch #13 to exchange 6-axle power for 4-axle power.

  • Train 251’s 6-axle power is cut off, and is taken to the Klamath Falls Shops.

  • 4-Axle power for 251 from the Klamath Falls Shops is coupled to 251’s train.

  • Before departing from Klamath, 251’s crew must obtain authority from the Dispatcher to occupy the Coos Bay Branch.

  • After an air test, 251 proceeds west to Coos Bay.

  • Train 251 departs through the Klamath Falls West Yard Throat Switch #13 to the Klamath Falls siding and the Coos Bay line.

  • Contact the Coos Bay Yardmaster when departing K Falls.

Coos Bay – Exchange loaded cars for empties

  • At Coos Bay, 251 is lined to empty tracks 1, 2 or 3.

  • The train will need to split into three cuts of cars and should occupy the empty tracks 1, 2 and 3 in the Coos Bay Yard.

  • Once clear of the Coos Bay line, notify the Dispatcher.

  • 251’s power is cut off and is moved to locomotive storage track by the road crew.

  • Coos Bay switcher removes 251’s caboose and spots it on the caboose storage track.

  • NOTE: Locomotives are not permitted on the ore docks. “Reach” or “idler” cars must be used to access ore cars on the ore dock.

  • Coos Bay switcher shoves 251’s train onto the empty ore dock track for unloading.

252 – Great Lakes - Empty eastbound ore train Coos Bay to Fairport

  • Coos Bay switcher pulls the empty ore cars off the ore dock and makes up 252’s train on the arrival/departure track.

  • Coos Bay switcher couples a caboose to west end the empty ore cars pulled from the ore dock, now train 252.

  • Locomotives are assigned and are coupled by the road crew to the east end of the empty ore cars, train 252.

  • When ready for departure from Coos Bay, notify the Dispatcher.

  • After an air test, train 252 proceeds east to Klamath Falls, stopping just west of the depot at signal 8R, west of the Klamath West Switch #5 to exchange

4-axle for 6-axle power.

  • Request unlock for Engine Facility, Switch #9 to swap power.

Klamath West – Power swap - change 4-axle for 6-axle power

  • Train 252’s 4-axle power is cut off and clears and is taken to the K Falls Shops.

  • After an air test, 252 departs West Klamath Falls upon signal.
