GENERAL INDEX

This index provides the principal access to information in the manual. It has both routine and innovative features.

Principal pages for insect species, taxonomic groups, and subjects of importance are designated by bold-face type. For insect species, the principal pages are the initial page of a text discussion and tables or text tablulations supplementing this discussion. Both the insect scientific name and its common name, if one is available, are given in the text discussion. Elsewhere in the text, use of scientific names and common names is alternated. To provide access for a reader, complete pagination is listed for insects under both scientific and common names. This procedure was also followed in indexing closely related species having a group common name.

In addition, pages with illustrations are marked with an asterisk. Illustrations for an insect are designated under both scientific and common names. If an illustration involves an insect-related condition—e.g., blowdown, insect disease—appropriate pages are designated with an asterisk for both the insect and the subject.
