Francois Duvalier was elected president of Haiti September 9, 1957. Before serving as president he worked as a physician, therefore grabbing the nickname “papa doc”. In 1950 Francois led the resistance against President Paul Magliore and thus was elected president for a 6 year term. However, this did not matter to him, by 1964 he declared himself President for life. He was the only presidential candidate that the Haitian military permitted to run a campaign. He was eventually authorized to rule by decree due to a state of siege enforced by the legislature on May 2, 1958.
