Command2 The Demand of Discipleship – Follow the Commands of Christ
Follow Me” [Matt. 4:19]
Paul Harvey once said, “We’ve drifted away from being fishers of men to being keepers of the aquarium.” Well said! Jesus said, “Follow me and I’ll make you fishers of men”. The call of God to, “follow” is the call to, “fish”. What a great analogy for true discipleship.

  1. The Call to Follow is a Call to All! [1John 2:2; John 3:16]

  1. Who are the all?

  1. Sinners - Matt. 9:13

  2. The weary and worn out – Matt. 11:28

  3. The thirsty and the one who wishes – Rev. 22:17

  1. Following Jesus means changing goals, affections, and priorities.

  1. Mark 10:17 - 23 What was the love of the young ruler? ___________

    1. What two things did Jesus ask him to do? [v21] ___________ & _____________

    2. What did Jesus mean by what He said in verse 23 about it being “hard” for a wealthy man to enter the kingdom of God? ____________________________________________________________

  1. Peter, Andrew, James and John had a goal of becoming great fishermen. What was the new goal that Jesus offered to them? [Matt. 4:19] “_________ ___ _____”.

a. God will take the occupation and knowledge we gain from a secular vocation and use it for a “kingdom” vocation. How is God using your life’s goals for His purpose now? What do you think He could accomplish through you if you were to use your vocation to, “fish for men”?

  1. How does fishing for men relate to fishing for fish?

    1. Fishermen cast their nets at night for the best results. [Luke 5:5]

    2. Fishermen used a powerful tool to attract fish. They would put a bright light over the water, and then surround the fish that came to the light with nets.

    3. Jesus uses this same method to attract people. John 8:12 says, “I m the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life”.

    4. But Jesus was only on the earth for a limited time. [2Cor. 4:6-7] Where does the light shine from now? ______________________________________________. What do you think Jesus meant when He said, “I will MAKE YOU fishers of men”? ____________________________

* Fishing with light rather than lures is God’s way of fishing for men. Lures usually have a hook in the bait. Some ministries try to use worldly methods to catch men. While this bait method does work, it doesn’t usually last long. The reason: The bait leaves a bad taste, and the hook makes a sore mouth. It is deceptive. What does Matt. 5:14-16 compare light to? _________ __________! What will happen when this genuine light is used to attract men? “They will see your ______ _______ and __________ your Father in heaven”.

Our good works [light] lets others see that what Christ offers – the Gospel - is genuine or real because it has changed you and is working in your life.

4. What is the energy source for this “light”? [Luke 24:49; Acts 2:8] The __________ _________!
5. Sometimes we are not comfortable with fishing for me [witnessing] What other promises do I have that Christ will help us? [John 14:16-18] The Holy Spirit is our “____________”
Close: Remember, it is no small decision to follow Christ. It means a total restructuring of our priorities. It is a matter of putting God’s business first. And it really begins with “light” [change] in our own personal life. What does Gal.5:16-17 say about how your life is re-directed? “________ in the ___________”.

It is only the uncovered light that is able to attract others to Christ. Is your light shining?
