“ESTIMATION OF STATURE FROM MEASUREMENTS OF HANDS AND FEET IN TRIBAL POPULATION.”
BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK: 6.1 Need for the study :
Stature is considered as one of the important parameters for personal identification in forensic anthropology. It provides an insight into various features of a population including nutrition, health and genetics.1With the increasing frequency of road and train accidents, floods, fire, deliberate mutilation, disfigurement and natural disasters, there is need for such studies which help to identify the deceased from fragmentary and dismembered human remains. In such situations measurements of hands and feet provide good approximation about the height of a person.1 The need for the present study is because of the paucity of data that allow reconstruction of stature from the dimensions of hands and feet among tribal population.
The stature prediction occupies relatively a central position both in the anthropological research and in the identification necessitated by the medical jurisprudence or by the medicolegal expert. The use of anthropometry in the field of forensic medicine dates back to 1882 when Alphonso Bertillion invented a system for criminal identification based on Anthropometry measurements.3
Ruttihauser reported a highly significant degree of correlation between height and foot length in African children. She showed that the estimation of stature from foot lengths has confidence limits of the same order as those found for estimation of stature from long bones in adults.4 A regression analysis study by Saxena SK was based ob the measurement of hand length, hand breadth and sole length in adult Nigerian males between the ages of 20 – 30 years. The results showed that there are significant correlation between the stature of an individual and the above measurements.5 Similar study was carried out by Sanli SG et al. for stature estimation and they used multiple linear regression model and reported this method to be more precise in predicting stature.6
6.3 Objectives of the Study: 1. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the anthropometric relationships between dimensions of hands and feet with stature and to devise regression formulae to estimate stature from these dimensions.
2. The study examines the relationship between stature and dimensions of hands and feet among tribal population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS 7.1 Source of Data : A cross sectional sample of 200 tribals (100 males and 100 females) between the age group of 20-30 years from Kasaragod District of Northern Kerala who are culturally and linguistically similar.
7.2 Method of Collection of Data : Sample of the study will be drawn from the tribal community in Kasaragod District, Northern Kerala.
Four anthropometric measurements that is hand length, hand breadth, foot length and foot breadth will be measured independently of the left and right sides of each individual. Stature of each individual will be recorded.
Land marks and technique involved in taking anthropometric measurements:-
It is the vertical distance between point vertex and the floor.
Hand length :
It is the projected distance between the mid point of a line joining the styloid process of radius and ulna bones of forearm and the tip of third finger.
Hand breadth :
It is the distance between most prominent point on the lateral aspect of base of second metacarpal to the most prominent point on the medial aspect of the base of fifth metacarpal.
Foot length :
It is the distance from the most prominent part of the heel backward to the most distal part of the longest toe (great or second toe).
It is the distance between the most prominent point on the medial aspect of head of first metatarsal to the most prominent point on the lateral aspect of head of fifth metatarsal.
Instruments used- sliding calipers will be used for hand and foot measurements.
Vertical scale will be used for stature estimation.
Inclusion Criteria : Apparently healthy, asymptomatic males and females of age group 20-30 years.
Exclusion Criteria : 1. Males and females with physical deformities and systemic illness affecting stature, hand and foot measurements will be excluded from the study.
2. Age group below 20 years and above 30 years.
7.3 Does the study require any investigation/ intervention to be conducted on patients/human/animals? If so, please describe briefly.
YES, prior informed consent from each participant will be taken. Consent form enclosed.
7.4. Has ethical clearance been obtained from your institution in case of 7.3? YES
