Notes for Valentine Johnston Powelson:

1. [From Frank W Powelson's book] "In 1913 my wife and I visited Erastus and Joe, grand children of Conrad, and while there I read a diary of Valentine's which he kept from the time he was 17 or 18 years of age. In it he referred in a great many instances to the hardships inflicted upon him by his father, Conrad. Judging from the word pictures, Conrad must have been a rather stern and exacting father. Even after Valentine became of age, the only remuneration he received far his services was the clothes he wore and the bare necessities."

POWELSON VALENTINE, Linton township; farmer; born December 2, 1812, in Linton township; son of Conrad and Katie (Johnson) Powelson, who came from Hampshire county, Virginia, in 1808, and lived in Franklin township, on the Robinson section, till 1811, when they came to Linton township Mr. Powelson was married in 1841, to Ellen Thrapp, daughter of Joseph and Jemima (Campen) Thrapp: Five of their nine children survive: Erastus N., Alfred Playfair, Valentine P., Joseph Thrapp and Morgan Evart.
5. Nov 2006: http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Coshocton/cofile4.htm

The remains of the prehistoric dwellers in Linton township are not very numerous. There are, however, several low fortifications and a few small mounds along the valley of Wills creek. One of these fortifications is situated on the plains, about half a mile southwest from Plainfield, at the cross roads. It consists of four embankments, enclosing a square figure, containing several acres. At each corner of the square is an entrance. The embankment originally was perhaps six feet above the surrounding level, but it has since been almost obliterated by the plow. Another circular embankment, enclosing about an acre, was found on the farm belonging to V. J. Powelson, in section 22, several miles farther down the creek. The outlines are now so slight as to be scarcely discernable.

"July 26, 1895, Friday Coshocton Age

The sons of V. J. Powelson, deceased, viz: E.N., Joe and Rev. Alfred removed last week from the family grave yard on the old home of their grandfather, Conrad Powelson, on Willscreek, now owned by Thomas Kirk, the skeletons of the grandfather, grand-mother and several of the sons, children of the old folks and the children of the late V. J. and Ellen (Thrap) Powelson, to the number of nine skeletons in all, to the Plainfield cemetery, where the parents of these three sons were buried within the last 18 or 20 months. The sons tell me that they had to dig at least seven feet deep to get the skeletons of their dead. Some of them have been buried for 65 years, some 50 years, and some later. The sculls, teeth and larger bones were all sound. They suppose that the reason why the bodies were buried so deep, that our earlier settlers feared that wolves, or other wild animals might dig up the dead. "
