13. Johannes (John)4 Powelson (Cornelius3, Jacob H2, Nicholas1) was born 04 Apr 1719 in Somerville, Somerset Co, New Jersey, and died 17 Jul 1788 in Bedminster Twp, Somerset, New Jersey. He married Harmpje (Horemptje/Messeler) Messler Abt. 1745 in New Jersey, daughter of Johannes Messler and Catryntje Niefies. She was born 15 Oct 1721 in Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York, and died Aft. Feb 1789 in New Jersey.
Notes for Johannes (John) Powelson:

This "JOHANNES POWELSON IS CALLED BY FRANK W POWELSON" the beginning of: THE NEW JERSEY BRANCH

1. The children of Johannes are listed in an article about Abram J Powelson. I have scaned this into the website.

2. Johannes settled At Sourland, Somerset County, N.J., buying a large farm. By trade, he was a cordwainer or shoe-maker.

3. Johannes having a growing family of ten children, the eldest having just reached his majority, it became necessary to have a larger farm, consequently he purchases, May 1, 1767, from Jacob Vander Veer, the Leonard Streight farm near the village of Pluckamin, in Bedminster Twp., containing 259 acres of land for 873 pounds Jersey money paid in seven annual payments; the last paid 1773. Here he lived an industrious and frugal life. He was an elder of the old Dutch Congregation of Bedminster. The Consistory met at his house frequently as the said records show. And it is not to wonder that the character of the children were religious, when the parents manifested such a deep interest in the spiritual welfare of the church.

4. He was a Rev. War Soldier

5. Burial: Bedminster Cemetery; Bedminster Twp, Somerset, NJ--69, 3 mo. on tombstone, sp Pouelson
Notes for Harmpje (Horemptje/Messeler) Messler:

1. From Frank W Powelson's book: He married Horemptje Messaler. She was the daughter of Johannes Messelaer and Catryntje, his wife. Horemptje was born 1728 on her father's farm leading from Cedar Grove to Middlebush, N.J.

2. Another place has her birth date as being Oct 1721.

Notes for Joanna Van Metre:

Dec 2011: http://www.skeeterkitefly.com/finelineage_B2.htm

"Around 1735 he had married Agnes "Angelitje" Powelson aka Poulson, the sister of Rebecca Powelson who married Johannes Van Metre [Sr.] After the death of Johannes (and Rebecca?) their two children, Joanna and Johannes Jr., were raised by Jonas and Agnes; Jonas would be named their legal guardian in 1747, to help secure their legacies from grandfather John Van Metre, Indian Trader. Joanna would go on to marry William Burns."
Joanna Van Metre Burns died on August 21, 1801, "in the 69th year of her age"; William Burns [Sr.] followed on December 31, 1806. "They were both buried, side by side, in the little graveyard on the Kearneysville farm" (~vm/smyth page 39). William's will—which didn't make it through probate till December 18, 1810—was unique in mentioning a brother Robert Burns, "now of Pennsylvania."
Notes for William Burns, Sr.:

Dec 2011: http://www.skeeterkitefly.com/finelineage_B1.htm

"About the time he came to the Opequon, William Burns married Joanna Van Metre, second child and only daughter of Johannes Van Metre [Sr.] and Rebecca Powelson/Poulson (who will be surveyed, along with their family, in Chapter V-10). Joanna was born circa 1732 near the Monocacy River in Prince George's County, Maryland. After her father's death, she and her brother Johannes (John) Van Metre [Jr.] were raised by their maternal aunt Agnes (Angelitje) Powelson/Poulson and her husband Jonas Hedges: of whom see more here.
The Burns family homestead, though west of the creek in Berkeley County, was near present-day Kearneysville across the Opequon: just east of the Jefferson County border, midway between Martinsburg to the northwest and Harpers Ferry to the southeast. Joanna's brother John lived nearby in a house that still stands at 177 Elsie Drive; built circa 1780, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004."

2. In keeping with the Dutch patronymic naming system, Anna was named to honor Powel's maternal grandmother, Annitje Praa Powelson.

The spelling had evolved to "Anna" by the time of the above legal papers.

John P Powelson shows Lewis as being the son of Antje & Abraham Powelson...another marriage. Gladys Powelson Jones has Lewis as being the son of Abraham Powelson, Antje's (Anna) brother.

5. I can't find "Five Mile Run" but there is a Six Mile Run and a Ten Mile Run in the same county, so maybe you just run one mile less.

She was born 1765 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, and died 1845 in Mifflin Township, Pike Co, Ohio.
Notes for Abraham Powelson:

Abraham, baptized May 4, 1760 is supposed to be the father of Lewis, born May 8, 1778, died Jan. 24, 1864, who moved up into Penna. and afterwards into Ohio. The reason for this assumption is that Lewis named his first born son Abraham and it is known that Lewis is a cousin to Rinear (1807), the son of Reinier.(1769) {Frank W Powelson}

Notes for Mary Barkalow:

Jan 2009: This site has her name as Mary Barklow.
