William R. H. Powelson, Cross Creek, 4th Corporal, was one of K's most faithful and efficient members. He was a model in industry and attentiveness to the requirements of camp and field, and was ever looking ahead to secure best results and promote the best interests of his comrades and himself. He was promoted Sergeant on the death of Hayes, Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. He was with the Company all through its service, save a few months when he was in hospital, having been severely wounded at Spottsylvania C. H. in the charge on morning of May 12, '64, shot through both thighs as he leaped to the top of the rebel breastworks. Was in all the important battles. When released from military duty he moved with his wife and little daughter to his farm in Dent county, Mo., which he had left in '61 on account of the border troubles. His spirit of industry and his integrity secured for him a pleasant and prosperous home and a good record in citizenship. He died April 16, 1901, and was buried in the Laketon cemetery, Lake Spring, Mo.

1. He was trained as a minister. In 1904-5 he wrote a history of Co K 140th PA Volunteers. was in major battles, including Chancellorsville, Gettysburg & Appomattox.

He was a Presbyterian minister in MO, KS, & CO. Moved to Boulder.

In his later years he tried to piece together the family history. He turned over material to Frank W. Powelson, who did work on the Virginia Branch. This material he left to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Washington College and Western Theological Seminary, where his course was interrupted by three years service in the Union Army during the Civil War, from Aug. 8, 1862 to Oct. 1865 as 1st Sergeant Co. K 140th Pa. Vols. and 1st Lieutenant Co. G 41st U. S. CT. He was moderator of Colorado Synod in 1905.

Benjamin Powelson was born in Virginia, nr. Romney, in an area that is now part of West Virginia. His father was Charles Powelson and his mother was Catherine Chase. (see LDS website for family lineage.)

His family moved to Cross Creek, Washington Co. Penn.(right across the border from Virginia), in the late 1840's. He served in the Union Army in a Pennsylvania regiment during the Civil War, inducted as a private ,Sept. 4, 1862, and promoted to Sergeant. He was ordained a Presbyterian Minister in 1868. From 1871 to 1873, he served as the first pastor of 'First Presbyterian Church' of Montrose, Henry Co. MO. The church was used as a school, and Rev. Powelson taught there. The family moved often:-from Henry Co. to Dade Co., Missouri, then to Kansas,about 1883, and finally to Colorado,about 1890, where they lived in Grand Junction, (1894) Gunnison, and then Boulder. Mersylvia and Benjamin had 12 children, but the first ones died at a young age. Mercie lived with her daughter, Leora Ridgeway, and her family, in Boulder after Benjamin's death in 1914.

Benjamin's brother, Philip, a widower, married Mersylvia's sister, Phebe, who was the widow of William McDowell.
