Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: select clothing and equipment appropriate for sea kayaking; transport and handle kayaking equipment in preparation for sea kayaking on sheltered or slow-moving water; demonstrate strokes which are effective on sheltered or slow-moving water in a sea kayak; demonstrate skills in safety and rescue procedures for sea kayaking; and demonstrate an understanding for the care of self, others and the environment.

1 Definitions

Sea kayak is a fully decked water craft designed for one or two paddlers (using double bladed paddles) in individual cockpits wearing spraydecks. It has a minimum of two bulkheads with watertight hatch covers, creating buoyancy compartments fore and aft, which ensures the craft floats level on capsize. Hull shape should be appropriate for sea conditions, ie fore and aft rocker and flared ends. It has a rudder or skeg for directional control and deck lines and toggles for safety.

Sheltered water or slow-moving water is water protected from the effects of significant wind and wave action. This includes estuaries, river deltas, sheltered beaches, lakes and coastal inlets with minimal tidal speed. This type of water excludes Grade I whitewater rivers, open seas and large lakes.

T rescue is a rescue whereby a capsized kayaker rights their kayak using support from another kayak.

X rescue is a deep water rescue whereby the kayaker uses another kayak or kayaks to assist in emptying the fully capsized kayak and then re-enters from the water.

Element 1
Select clothing and equipment appropriate for sea kayaking.
Performance criteria
1.1 Clothing and personal equipment is selected for sea kayaking and its selection justified.
1.2 The design and construction of equipment is identified in terms of its appropriateness for sea kayaking.
Range sea kayak, paddle, buoyancy vest, spraydeck, towline.
Element 2
Transport and handle kayaking equipment in preparation for sea kayaking on sheltered or slow-moving water.
Range sea kayak, paddle, buoyancy vest, spraydeck, towline.
Performance criteria
2.1 Kayak and equipment are transported safely on a vehicle and/or trailer without damage.
2.2 The sea kayak is launched and retrieved from the water without damage to the kayak and its fittings.
2.3 Getting into and out of the sea kayak is completed safely and efficiently at the shore.
Element 3
Demonstrate strokes which are effective on sheltered or slow-moving water in a sea kayak.
Performance criteria
3.1 Forward and backward paddling strokes are effective.
3.2 Controlled turns are performed.
3.3 A low-brace is demonstrated.
3.4 The sea kayak is brought to a stop from a fast paddle within two boat lengths.
3.5 Obstacles are avoided using appropriate strokes.
Element 4
Demonstrate skills in safety and rescue procedures for sea kayaking.
Performance criteria
4.1 Knowledge of safety equipment and party equipment is demonstrated.
Range towline, repair kit, first aid kit, buoyancy vests.
4.2 A capsize and escape from a sea kayak fitted with a spraydeck is demonstrated.
4.3 A simulated rescue of another kayaker is undertaken with assistance.
Range T rescue, X rescue.
Element 5
Demonstrate an understanding for the care of self, others and the environment.
Performance criteria
5.1 Self management within the given environment is demonstrated.
Range food, fluid, sun protection aids, extra clothing.
5.2 Potential health problems associated with sheltered or slow-moving water are identified.
Range hypothermia, cold water immersion, cramps, sunburn, blisters, dislocations, head injuries.
5.3 Methods for avoiding potential health problems are described.

5.4 Communications systems are identified and understood on and off the water.
Range hand, paddle and whistle signals, voice.
5.5 The New Zealand Environmental Care Code and Water Care Code are applied.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
