Creation of 2nd Level Domains

Procedure for the Application for Creating New Second Level Domain
(SLD) under .SG

  1. General

    1. SGNIC is the ccTLD Administrator for .sg domain name space. Currently, only the following six Second Level Domains under the .sg are supported by SGNIC in line with the domain names under generic TLD (gTLD):

com.sg, net.sg, org.sg, gov.sg, edu.sg, and per.sg.

Any application or proposal for creating a new Second Level Domain (SLD) shall be submitted to SGNIC for consideration and approval.

    1. As additional SLD may use up the resources within the .sg domain name space, the following procedure shall be followed by an applicant in applying for a SLD and by SGNIC in approving the SLD.

    1. As far as possible, SGNIC will adopt applicable policy guidelines drawn up by ICANN in administering domain name space. To minimize potential confusion in the 'marketplace', SGNIC may limit the number of new SLDs to be created.

  1. How to Apply

    1. Any application or proposal for creating a new SLD must be made in writing and contain the following:

  1. the name of the intended SLD, which should be no more than three characters in length (the abbreviation used should be an obvious derivative of a word that appropriately describe the domain it represents);

  2. a brief description of purpose or function of the new SLD;

  3. outline the necessity for the new SLD;

  4. where applicable, support from the industry regulatory body or relevant authority.

  5. a written statement of:

      1. support from the industry or association which the applicant belongs; and

      2. common interest shared by entities that are expected to request names within the domain;

  6. list the eligibility criteria as a registrant in the new SLD; and

  7. confirm that the proposed SLD meets the criteria outlined in para 3;

    1. The application or proposal should be accompanied by supporting documentation, information and/or statements.

  1. Criteria for Approving the Applications

SGNIC will assess the application for SLD to see if it meets the following criteria:

  1. It constitutes an appropriate use of limited resources;

  2. It acts as an unique identity for the Domain Name System;

  3. It describes the purpose of the organisation who owns the third level name;

  4. It assists in identifying the category of eligible registrants in the Domain Name System;

  5. It must be beneficial to existing users, potential users and the local Internet community as a whole;

  6. Support from the industry regulatory body or relevant authority where applicable.

  7. Its uses and functions are not wholly or substantially covered by any single existing SLD;

  8. There is no ambiguity between the proposed new SLD and existing SLDs;

  9. Support from the industry or association which the applicant belongs; and

  10. Common interest shared by entities that are expected to request names within the domain.

  1. Evaluation of Applications

Upon receiving the application, SGNIC will evaluate the application according to the criteria outlined in para 3. Before deciding on the application and where necessary, SGNIC may consult the local Internet community on the desirability of the creation of the proposed SLD.
