BLESSED ANTOINE CHEVRIER

A NOVENA OF PRAYER TO

BLESSED ANTOINE CHEVRIER

Introduction

A novena first of all recalls the time that the apostles and the Virgin Mary spent in prayer awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Novena of Prayer that we offer here, though, is based on the person of Father Antoine Chevrier. Father Chevrier (1826 – 1879) was a diocesan priest in Lyons, France. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in l986. The founder of the Family of Prado, he is now associated with the family of the saints and with Jesus Christ, who from heaven intercedes on our behalf (Letter to the Hebrews, Chapter 7: 25). We can pray to Father Chevrier, as well, asking him for the graces that we, and those we know, need. It is a moment, too, when we can ask God that he permit the canonization of this friend of Jesus Christ, and of the poor, Father Antoine Chevrier.

When Father Chevrier was still a young priest, he was appointed as curate for St. Andre Parish in the heart of the very poor neighborhood of La Guillotiere. He eventually spent his whole life in the same bustling corner of the city, where people were arriving daily to work in the newly built factories. On Christmas night in 1836 he was praying in front of the parish nativity scene. It was during that prayer that he realized that his life must change. He felt an inner necessity to reflect the life of Jesus Christ to an even greater degree. He sensed deeply that from that moment on he would do everything possible to follow Jesus more closely, and from that day on he would make the Word of God the center of his life.
It was four years later, in 1860 that he bought the old, and ill-famed, Prado Dance Hall. He decided not to change its name, even after he began to use it for the in-house program of First Communion preparation for adolescents. Later on he used parts of it and the adjacent buildings for the formation for future priests. Living in that grimy neighborhood, he saw how important it was to prepare poor priests to evangelize the multitudes of the poor. An additional fruit of that work was the careful preparation of a book, “The Priest According to the Gospel”, or “The True Disciple of Jesus Christ”.

From his first days at Prado, Father Chevrier was able to gather people around him. They were men and women who shared his ideals of a missionary life in the city. The young women eventually took on a special form of religious life.

As we reflect on Father Chevrier’s ministry we quickly become aware of his profound respect for all the varied people that he dealt with. They were overwhelmingly the poor. But he saw them as having a very special place in the heart of God. That meant that they had the right, the duty, to come to know that they were loved and saved by Jesus Christ.
Today, Father Chevrier, the Apostle of La Guillotiere, continues to teach God’s People how to know, to love and to follow Jesus ever more closely. It is his example that wins us over; how he constantly meditated on Jesus Christ attentive to the will of the Father. His favorite meditations were on the Crib, the Cross and the Tabernacle. In our prayer, we ask that we too be transformed by the same Holy Spirit who brings us into contact with the Incarnate and Risen Christ.

FIRST DAY

THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY WHICH HAS TOUCHED YOUR HEART - THE INCARNATION

“This beautiful mystery of the Incarnation which has touched your heart is where our zeal comes from. It gives meaning to all that we do and keeps us humble before the Father. It was this mystery that led me to ask God for the gift of poverty and humility. It was because of my meditation on this mystery that I asked to leave St Andre Parish, to better live out this poverty.

“I pray every day that God will fill his priests with the spirit of Jesus Christ, so that every day we can more and more resemble our model, Jesus. If we only were the images of Jesus Christ to our people! What wonderful things we would do for the Holy Church of God.”

(Letter to Father Gourdon, 1865)

He told them: Come and see. They went with him and saw and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.” (John 1: 39)

SECOND DAY

KNOWING JESUS CHRIST, THAT ‘S ALL THERE IS

“To know Jesus Christ, that’s all there is. Everything else is right there- in the knowledge of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the knowledge of God that invariably produces love. And the more that we know Jesus Christ, the more we appreciate his beauty, his greatness, all the riches that are his, the more our love grows. As our love grows, we seek to please him more, while rejecting everything that does not lead us to Jesus.

There is a main spring in a watch; it controls everything else and is responsible for telling us the time. It is as if Jesus were the main spring in us. With him, we show forth God in our lives. There, where our treasure us, there is our heart

(Mattew 6: 21-22).”

(The True Disciple, pages 99 and 100).

Where your treasure is, there also will be your heart. The eyes are like a lamp for the body. If your eyes are sound, your body will be full of light.” (Mattew 6: 21-22)

THIRD DAY

DO YOUR SENSE A GRACE WITHIN?
“So, then, do you have sense of an inner attraction leading you closer to Jesus Christ? It might be a sense of admiration for him, or amazement at the beauty of his life, or a certain awe at his goodness. Any number of things can serve as invitations to come closer to him. It is like receiving a little breath of air from the Divine, giving us a gentle refreshment. Another image is an inner light that can let us see Jesus more truly, as he truly is. It makes us aware of his goodness. If at some moment we sense this little breath, this tiny light, this gentle attraction to Jesus- cultivate it. Let our prayer and study help it to grow and to produce good fruit in us.”
(The True Disciple, pages 103, 104)

When Jesus learned that they had expelled the blind man from the synagogue, he found him and asked him: ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ The man answered, ‘Tell me who he is, Sir, so that I might believe in him.’ Jesus replied, ‘You have already seen him. He is the one who is talking with you. ‘I believe, Lord’, said the man, and he knelt down before him“ (John 9: 35 – 38)

FOURTH DAY

IF A PAINTER ONLY LOOKED AT HIMSELF …
“We mustn’t keep our gaze only on ourselves and on our problems. Instead, keep our eyes on Jesus. If a portrait painter were to constantly look in a mirror when doing someone’s portrait, he’d never get the model’s image painted. That’s what we have to do, keep looking at Jesus, without paying too much attention to ourselves. Then we will see how we are growing in the Spirit.
Apply ourselves constantly to the task of imitating Our Lord, with love in our hearts and with the desire to imitate him. If we do that calmly, without any fuss, our faults, and all that we find most miserable in ourselves will be washed away in the ocean of mercy that comes with the love of Jesus. Everything else we can put to rest.”
(Letter to Sister Marie-Mathieu, 1873).

I tell you, the great love that she has shown proves that her many sins have been forgiven” (Luke 7: 47)

FIFTH DAY

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT JOBS IN HIS VINEYARD!
“My good friend, when we get close to Jesus, that isn’t the time to back away from him. It is the time, instead, to insist that God give us what we lack. God needs so many workers; he takes a few from here and a few from there. But he doesn’t ever seem to find all that he needs. The vineyard is huge. There are so many different jobs in his vineyard!

“Let us be happy with the little job that is assigned to us; we’ll be content enough with what we can do with those with whom we are working. Keep up your strength.

“I hope to form a society of simple men. We might be the ones going around with muddy shoes, but if we stick together, together we’ll do pretty well. I can’t run very far or very fast anymore. Now it’s become my turn to find a quiet place in the corner and rest, while keeping my eyes open and cheering you on. It’ll be up to you who are in better shape than I to run the rest of the race. That’s something like how we will live out our mission together.”
(Letter to Father Jean-Claude Jaricot, 1877).

Jesus told the man that he had cured of demons, ‘Go back home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how kind he has been to you.’”

(Mark 5: 19)

SIXTH DAY

THIS IS OUR LIFE AND OUR LOVE
“It makes me sad to see everybody so absorbed with every type of novelty without any attention on those things that should be the center of our efforts. We are here for one thing and for one thing only: That is to know Jesus Christ and his Father, and to make him known to others. That is such a beautiful thing to make the center of our lives. That is what I look for in my brothers and sisters, my catechists.
“I’m so happy when I’m teaching the catechism. I feel on fire. Knowing how to speak of God and how to make him known to the poor and the ignorant- this is our first love and our life!”

(Letter to Sister Veronique Lheraud, 1873).

Eternal life means to know you, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ whom you sent.” (John 17: 3).

SEVENTH DAY

FIRST OF ALL, LET’S ASK FOR THE SPIRIT OF GOD

“How great is our need of prayer! When we have the spirit of God, things will go much better for us. God will let us see the worth of what we are doing. But if we don’t have the spirit of God, what will all that we do be worth, really? Nothing at all, except perhaps for our shame and our condemnation.

So, we begin by asking for the spirit of God, that the Holy Spirit give us his gift of charity and the gift of humility above all. But we also want his sweetness, his zeal. Without them we will be of little value, and what we do will have little value. Always, every day, we should never cease to ask, to demand that the Lord give us what we need to serve him. This is the advice I give to everyone, men and women: Do all you can to receive the spirit of God. Then we know that all will go well.”
(Letter to Sister Veronique Lheraud, 1877)

The risen Jesus appeared in their midst and said to them”: ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, so I send you’. And he breathed on them, and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’“ (John 20: 21, 22).

EIGHTH DAY

WHO ARE THEY WHO HAVE THE SPIRIT OF GOD?

“Those who have prayed much and have never stopped asking;

Those who long ago took up the Holy Gospels;

Those who have come to know the words and actions of Our Lord intimately;

Those who have studied the lives of the saints and have learned from them how to model their lives on Jesus;

Those who have long since begun the work of eradicating from the their lives all that is opposed to the spirit of God;

Those who don’t speak of themselves;

Those who model all they say and all that they do on the words and actions of Jesus Christ, those who have taken the Lord Jesus as the foundation of their lives;

For them, Jesus is their life, the foundation for all that they are. Jesus is their goal. ‘It is now not I that lives, but Jesus who lives in me.’“ (Galatians 2: 20)
(The True Disciple, pages 199, 200)

As bad as you are, if you know how to give good things to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” (Luke 11: 13)

NINTH DAY

JUST AS THE WOOD BURNS

“The spirit of God can’t be found in a set of rules, nor in special practices we might do. nor is he found in anything that we can see, certainly not in the special clothes we wear or even in our disciplined lives. The Spirit is in us when he is given to us.

“We can hear a sound but we don’t know where it is coming from nor where it is going. The wind blows where it will. In fact, often enough, it whisks by at the moment that we least expect. When we aren’t expecting it, we might feel a gentle breeze brushing on our arm. It is totally independent of our own will. It is liable to come at any moment, at any hour of the day. It is up to us just to be there, to receive it when it comes.

“The spirit of God, too, is free, independent of us, and comes when we least expect it. It probably won’t be at a moment of deep study, or when we’re absorbed with rules and regulations, or when we are trying to figure out the place of the spirit in the world. The spirit is a divine fire that is always burning, but it is also one that lets itself be seen only on occasion. It shows itself and then disappears; something like the log that is on fire. What’s important is to be sitting next to that fire when it bursts forth, and delight in it. It is for us to keep the flame alive so that others can share in its heat and light.”

(The True Disciple, Page 459)

When they bring you to trial, do not worry about what you are going to say or how you will say it. When the time comes, you will be given what you are to say. For the words you speak will not be yours; they will come from the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” (Matthew 10: 19, 20).

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF

FATHER ANTOINE CHEVRIER

God, Our Father,

You have chosen Blessed Antony Chevrier

To announce the Gospel to the poor,

And to form apostles guided by your spirit.

We thank you for all you have already granted us through his intercession.

Father Chevrier is our guide, as we try to follow your son more closely.

The mysteries of the Crib, the Cross and the Tabernacle, help us discover the beauty of your love.
Grant that he be the bearer of our prayer to you,

that we might obtain still greater favors,

(Particularly the healing of . . .)

This we ask of you, who live forever and ever.
Amen!

O Word ! O Christ !

O Word ! O Christ !

How beautiful you are!

How wonderful you are!

Who can know you?

Who can come to understand you?

Grant, O Christ, that I may know you and love you.

May you be the Light;

Let a ray of that divine light penetrate my soul,

So that I may see you

And come to know you.

Instill in me a great faith in you,

So that all your words will be for me so many lights.

They will enlighten my path and enable me to go to you

And follow you in all the paths of justice and truth.
O Christ ! O Word !

You are my Lord, my one and only Master.

Speak, I want to listen to you and put your word into practice.

I want to listen to your divine word, because I know it comes from heaven.

I want to listen to it, meditate on it, live it out in my life,

Because it is your word.

In your word I find life, joy, peace and happiness.

Speak, Lord, you are my Lord and my Master.

I do not want to listen to anyone but you.
Antony Chevrier.

CHRISTMAS 1856
While I was meditating on the poverty of Our Lord before the Manger Scene that Christmas night I was deeply struck by how Jesus had lowered himself to come among men. Then and there, I was determined to leave all behind and live as poorly as possible.

I said to myself: The Son of God came down on this earth to save us and to convert sinners. And what do we see around us? How many sinners there are still in this world! Men continue to bring about their condemnation.

So I decided to follow Our Lord Jesus Christ as closely as possible, in order to be better able to work effectively for the salvation of souls. It is my desire that you, too, follow Our Lord more closely”.
