River Inspection Highlights
April 7, 8- USGS Park gage read 3.0 feet.


May 13, 14 - USGS Park gage read 2.5 feet

  • 48 alligators in Deep Hole

  • Injured Double-crested Cormorant observed with fishing hook in mouth and fishing line around wing

  • 55 Wood Storks, 51 Great Egrets, 10 Snowy Egrets, 0 Black-crowned Night Heron, 3 Great Blue Heron, 3 Tricolored Heron, 28 Cattle Egrets and 23 Anhinga on mangrove rookery island

  • 1 boat observed speeding


June 3, 4 - USGS Park gage read 1.89 feet

  • 101 alligators observed in Deep Hole

  • Numerous wading birds in Lower Lake due to shallow water

  • 3 manatees and 3 porpoise observed

  • 55 Wood Storks, 38 Great Egrets, 4 Snowy Egrets, 0 Black-crowned Night Heron, 2 Great Blue Heron, 4 Tricolored Heron, 47 Cattle Egrets and 26 Anhinga on mangrove rookery island


July 18, 21 - USGS Park gage read 5.97 feet

  • Water levels much higher than previous month. No alligators observed in Deep Hole

  • 1 manatee observed

  • Much fewer crab traps in river due to reduced crabs being caught. Several commercial crab fishermen have removed their traps from the river

  • 21 Wood Storks, 50 Great Egrets, 2 Snowy Egrets, 2 Black-crowned Night Heron, 0 Great Blue Heron, 6 Tricolored Heron, 25 Cattle Egrets, 1 Little Blue Heron and 9 Anhinga on mangrove rookery island


August 26, 28 - USGS Park gage read 6.41 feet

  • 2 manatees observed- adult and baby, 2 porpoise observed

  • Enough water to paddle over dam, no portaging required

  • Migrant birds observed- Prothonotary and Yellow-throated Warblers

  • 0 Wood Storks, 17 Great Egrets, 5 Snowy Egrets, 4 Black-crowned Night Heron, 0 Great Blue Heron, 1 Tricolored Heron, 50 Cattle Egrets, and 4 Anhinga on mangrove rookery island

There have been few new incidents/violations (under the River Rule, 62D-15, F.A.C.) since the last Council meeting.
