Objective:

The student will produce a folk song into a pop song and initiate the diffusion of the popular song through social media in order to demonstrate the difference in how folk music and popular music diffuse and how folk culture and popular culture influence people’s perceptions of places and regions.


Introduction:

Upon the day of your graduation you will find printed in your program the Alma Mater, a folk song about your school, which describes the most important aspects of the school and the day-to-day life therein. With few exceptions, the day of your graduation is the day this song is diffused, in person, to you.


You will transform this folk song into a Pop Music song in order to demonstrate how Popular Music is diffused. You will diffuse the song via digital and social media. This process will allow you to see how a folk culture song can become a pop culture song and spread quickly to a heterogeneous population.
Definitions:

Folk Song: A song originating among the people of a country or area, passed by oral tradition from one singer or generation to the next, often existing in several versions, and marked generally by simple, modal melody and stanzaic, narrative verse.
Popular Music: Written by specific individuals for the purpose of being sold to a large number of people.
Alma Mater: Etymology: Latin, fostering mother; 1 : a school, college, or university which one has attended or from which one has graduated 2 : the song or hymn of a school, college, or university
Directions:

  1. Examine the words of the song. The Alma Mater celebrates what is great about the school. Consider how the lyrics should change in order to celebrate the folk culture of Manvel High School. How can you include positive key traits, traditions, and customs of Manvel High School in your remix of the Alma Mater? How might the music impact how the intended audience appreciates or dislikes the song?




  1. Revise the words and score to the extent you think is necessary in order to appeal to your target audience (Manvel High School Students). Remember, the goal is to take this folk culture song and turn it into a song of pop culture. This means that even though it is about Manvel High School, people from other schools or from the community would listen to this song because it is catchy, interesting, and has a good tune.



  1. Record your remixed track as a video or an audio track and host on Youtube.

DO NOT SHARE THE LINK outside of your group members until the morning of January 26th.
E-mail the link to tvansant@alvinisd.net. Videos must be posted and link e-mailed by January 26th or they are considered late and the group will receive a 0 for the project.
In the subject of your e-mail put 2015 Van Sant Alma Mater Remix Project (last name of someone in your group).


  1. Make and execute a group plan to diffuse (share) the remixed track to as many people as you can in 10 days. This does not have to be limited to social media. Think about other ways companies advertise their products. The group with the most hits/views wins. In years past the videos have received up to 1,200 views. Get creative in how you plan to share the video with others. Ideas: Twitter and other social media, emails, QR Code, etc.

This will take place between January 26th and February 4th. Save As: 2015 Van Sant Alma Mater Remix (one student’s last name in the group)




  1. (Process Memo 1) Write a detailed paragraph for each group member explaining how each group member participated.

This should be between 4-5 paragraphs with each paragraph labeled with the group member’s name.




  1. (Remix Reflection) Answer the following questions in paragraph form. This should be between 3 and 4 paragraphs.




    1. What format did you choose to record your pop song in and why?

    2. Write a minimum of two paragraphs explaining what factors led to changing the song.

    3. Include the song lyrics.

    4. How did remixing the Alma Mater make you feel about your school?


After February 4th:


  1. (Process Memo 2) Provide a detailed account of how you diffused your song and how successful or unsuccessful your group was at diffusing the song. This should include how many hits you received in 10 days.

Papers are Due February 13th typed and printed when you get to class.

Brief Overview:


  1. Rewrite the alma mater to reflect the customs and culture of MHS.

  2. Record a video or audio of your new song.

  3. On January 26th upload the video to youtube with the appropriate title found above.

  4. Devise a plan to get as many people to watch this video in a 10 day time period.

  5. In the meantime, write process memo 1 and the remix reflection.

  6. After the 10 days of diffusion, write process memo 2 explaining how this project demonstrates how folk culture is diffused to become a part of popular culture and write about the different origin of folk and pop culture.

  7. Turn in finished papers on February 13th.
