Presented by the Kaua‘i Historical Society as part of an ongoing historical lecture series. Chad Taniguchi of the Kaua‘i Office of the Department of Hawaiian Homelands will give an overview of the 1924 “Filipino Strike on Kaua‘i.” The strike for higher sugar plantation wages was led largely by Visayan Filipinos. When the strikers took two non-striking laborers prisoner, the episode erupted into violence, leaving 20 dead and others wounded. The strike was used as a 1976 University of Hawai‘i at Manoa study utilizing oral history as a means of retelling the strikers' stories.

A clip is used from “Pele’s Appeal.” Nelson Ho says that the Sierra Club is backing the Pele Defense Fund and states that the geothermal system would supply only 10 percent of energy needs. He feels it is necessary to look at other alternatives.
